Error correction that gets better as it scales
Adding more qubits usually adds more errors. This experiment shows a processor where the opposite happened, at least for now.
In one paragraph
A lab experiment on a 105-qubit superconducting processor ran surface code error correction at distances 3, 5 and 7. The logical error rate fell by a factor of about 2.1 with each increase in code distance, with real-time decoding. The result is a milestone on the road to useful quantum computers, but far from the end of it.
